Businesses Needed for Seekonk High School's Groundhog Day Job Shadow Program
 
Juniors and seniors at SHS are being encouraged to take the opportunity to explore a career of interest on

February 2, 2009 by shadowing someone who works in that field.
 
Students are responsible for finding their own placements, but we'd like to offer them a

list of local businesses that are willing to host students if asked.

Rhode Island Unemployment Insurance Benefits Extended
Due to the state's high unemployment rate, the maximum number of payable weeks has been extended from 13 to 20 weeks.

These additional extended benefits will go into effect the week beginning 11/9/08.

These "High Unemployment Benefits" will remain in effect for a minimum of 13 weeks,

at which time the 3-month average unemployment rate will be recalculated.

Social Security Announces Nationwide Launch of Compassionate Allowances
The agency's Compassionate Allowances initiative is a way to expedite the processing of disability claims for

applicants whose medical conditions are so severe that their conditions obviously meet Social Security's standards.

It will enable the agency to make decisions on these cases in days, rather than months or years.

There are currently 50 conditions that are recognized for expedited decision making.

Reading Mentors Currently Being Sought by the East Bay Community Action Program's RSVP Volunteer Core.

The Power Lunch Program is a six week cycle commitment where business owners and community leaders

spend 30 minutes/week reading and mentoring an East Providence elementary school child.

Studies show that students who read well and are exposed to positive role models make ethical

decisions that will effectively impact the future of communities in which they live.
